On World Polio Day, observed each year on October 24, the global community reflects on the extraordinary progress toward eradicating polio and renews its pledge to finish the job. For the Rotary Club of Mbarara, this day held profound significance as members looked back on a standout achievement: their dedicated PolioPlus campaign at Mbarara Health Centre IV, coupled with a generous $1,500 contribution to the PolioPlus Fund, which earned them special recognition from the Rotary District Governor.
World Polio Day honors the legacy of Jonas Salk, whose vaccine transformed a feared disease into one on the brink of extinction. Rotary International, as a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, has played a pivotal role, contributing billions and mobilizing millions of volunteers to reduce polio cases by over 99.9%. Uganda remains polio-free, but sustained vigilance through campaigns like Rotary’s PolioPlus ensures protection against any resurgence.
The Rotary Club of Mbarara embodied this commitment through a comprehensive PolioPlus initiative at Mbarara Health Centre IV. Club members partnered closely with local health workers to deliver not only oral polio vaccines to protect children but also the vital “Plus” elements that define the program:
– Vitamin A supplementation and deworming to boost child health and immunity.
– Nutritional counseling and hygiene education for families.
– Basic health screenings that addressed broader community needs.
The outreach transformed the health centre into a vibrant hub of prevention and empowerment. Families arrived in large numbers, children received their lifesaving drops amid smiles and encouragement, and Rotarians worked tirelessly alongside health teams to reach every eligible child. This holistic approach strengthened community trust in vaccination efforts and reinforced Uganda’s polio-free status.
What elevated this effort further was the club’s financial commitment: they contributed $1,500 to the PolioPlus Fund, directly supporting global eradication activities—from vaccine procurement and logistics to surveillance and community mobilization. This donation aligned with Rotary’s annual club goals and amplified impact through matching funds from partners like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
The District Governor recognized these outstanding contributions during a special ceremony.
The Governor presented the club with a certificate of appreciation, praising their leadership, seamless collaboration with government health systems, and exemplary Service Above Self. The honor highlighted how the $1,500 contribution and hands-on campaign at Mbarara Health Centre IV advanced Rotary’s mission and inspired other clubs across the district.
“This recognition celebrated our collective dedication,” a Rotary Mbarara member reflected. “By raising and contributing $1,500 to PolioPlus while delivering real impact on the ground, we helped protect children here and supported the global fight to end polio forever.” As the world commemorated World Polio Day, Rotary Mbarara’s achievement served as a powerful reminder: local action drives global success. Their work at Mbarara Health Centre IV, backed by the meaningful $1,500 donation, brought the vision of a polio-free world one step closer.
The club continues to look forward, planning further PolioPlus activities and deeper community partnerships. Until polio is eradicated for good, Rotary Mbarara remains steadfast for the children of Mbarara, for Uganda and for every child worldwide.
